Founders Jim and Debi Makaweo, having relocated from Hawaii, saw an opportunity to elevate the roadside produce stand concept by introducing hand-crafted chocolates that celebrate Northland’s natural treasures. December of that year marked the grand opening of their first boutique chocolate factory in the beautiful Bay of Islands.

In 2005, Makana® expanded to Blenheim, strategically placing its second store along the famous Marlborough Wine Trail. This location brought a unique opportunity to showcase the region’s world-class wines by incorporating them into their signature chocolates.

In 2006, Makana® found new custodians in Brian Devlin and Carole Flowers, who relocated from the UK and fell in love with both New Zealand and the Makana® brand. Sharing the founders’ passion for quality and innovation, Brian and Carole have continued the tradition of crafting premium chocolates that highlight local ingredients while adding their own distinct touch.
