When we hear sirens in the distance, most of us immediately think about the emergency unfolding ahead.
But behind every ambulance response is something many people never see — the dedicated teams working tirelessly behind the scenes to help keep New Zealanders safe.
At Hato Hone St John, frontline responders are there for people during some of life’s most difficult and uncertain moments. Day and night, ambulance officers, volunteers, dispatchers, and support teams respond to emergencies across towns, cities, and rural communities throughout Aotearoa.
Their work requires more than skill and training. It requires compassion, resilience, teamwork, and constant readiness.
More Than Just an Ambulance
When an ambulance arrives at an emergency, that moment is only the visible part of a much larger support system.
Behind every response are ambulance stations where frontline crews can:
- Rest and recover between callouts
- Restock critical medical equipment
- Prepare vehicles and supplies
- Regroup before heading back out into the community
These stations play a vital role in helping emergency teams stay ready to respond whenever they are needed.
That’s why the 2026 Hato Hone St John Light the Way Annual Appeal is focused on helping build and repair 10 vital ambulance stations across New Zealand. From Northland to Southland, these projects will help create safer, fit-for-purpose spaces for the people who spend their days caring for others.
Why This Matters to Makana
At Makana Confections, community has always been at the heart of what we do.
Over the years, we’ve seen how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference — whether it’s sending a gift to someone going through a difficult time, saying thank you, celebrating together, or simply sharing a moment of comfort.
While chocolate may seem simple, the moments surrounding it often aren’t.
This June, we wanted our annual charity campaign to support the people who are there for New Zealanders when it matters most.
Because behind every siren is a team of people who also need support.
Supporting the Teams Who Support Us
For the month of June, Makana Confections is proud to support the Hato Hone St John Light the Way Annual Appeal through our Limited-Edition Dark Macadamia Butter Toffee Crunch.
For every box sold, we’ll donate $3 directly to the Light the Way Annual Appeal, helping support the rebuilding and repair of ambulance stations across New Zealand.
The limited-edition release is available for $26.90 throughout June only.
It’s a small way we can all help contribute to something much bigger.

A Thank You to Frontline Responders
This campaign is ultimately about recognising the people behind the sirens — the teams who show up for communities across Aotearoa every single day.
To the frontline responders, volunteers, and support staff of Hato Hone St John: thank you for the care, dedication, and compassion you bring to your work.
And to everyone supporting this campaign throughout June — thank you for helping us Light the Way together.
