A Little Check-In Can Mean a Lot

As part of our month-long campaign supporting Youthline, we’re reminding everyone that sometimes, the smallest gestures can have the biggest impact. Whether it’s asking a loved one how they’re really doing, sending a thoughtful message, or simply taking a moment to pause and check in with yourself—these are powerful acts of care. At Makana, we believe in the importance of connection, and this week we’re encouraging our community to spread a little kindness.

Why a Simple “How Are You?” Can Change Everything

It sounds small, but that gentle question can crack open a world of relief for someone who’s been carrying their worries alone. When we ask “How are you, really?” we’re signalling:

  • You’re seen. A moment of true presence can remind someone they matter.
  • You’re valued. By lending an ear, we reinforce that their thoughts and feelings count.
  • You’re not alone. Even if words feel tangled, knowing someone cares helps untangle them.

Every one of us has had days when it felt easier to smile through the pain. Checking in gives permission to drop the mask—even for five minutes—and to connect with real, caring conversation.

How to Make Your Check-In Count

Starting the conversation can feel awkward. Here are three simple ways to open the door:

  • Ask with intention. Find a moment—over coffee, via text, or during a quick walk—and say, “I’ve been thinking about you. How are you doing today?”
  • Listen without fixing. Offer your full attention. Sometimes people just need to say it out loud; you don’t have to solve it.
  • Follow up. A quick “Just wanted to see how you’re feeling after our chat” shows you still care.

You don’t need grand gestures—sometimes a quick five-minute check-in can pivot someone’s day in the right direction.

Send a Care Pack, Send a Message of Support

Sometimes words aren’t easy—but a delicious, beautifully packaged Makana treat can say “I’m thinking of you” without needing to say anything at all.

Our handcrafted chocolate care packs are a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day. During June, every box of Dark Chocolate Macadamia Butter Toffee Crunch sold helps fund Youthline’s vital work, with $3 donated per box.

Whether it’s a gift for a friend, a thank-you for a colleague, or a moment of indulgence just for you, your purchase helps support young people across Aotearoa.

Take the Makana Check-In Challenge

We’re inviting you to join our “Check-In Challenge” this week:

✅ Day 1: Text a friend you haven’t heard from in a while.

✅ Day 3: Send a voice note to someone who could use a lift.

✅ Day 5: Ring a family member “just because.”

✅ Day 7: Share your experience on social with #CheckInForYouthline and tag us.

By layering these small acts of kindness, you’re not only supporting someone’s wellbeing—you’re helping spread awareness of Youthline’s 24/7 support. And remember, every box you purchase contributes $3 toward keeping those support lines open.
